In an effort to reduce the drastic rise of violent crime during the pandemic, the Harris County Commissioners Court announced on Wednesday that it will now require a minimum 10% payment on bonds issued to the public.
Why did the Commissioners Court pass this bond requirement? Due to public safety concerns and the ever-growing criminal case backlog that has been exacerbated by the Hurricane Harvey damage and the ongoing pandemic, authorities have decided to take action.
Minimum 10% Payment on Bonds Approved – What This Means for You
The Harris County Commissioners Court has unanimously approved a 10% minimum bail bond for criminal defendants. This is good news for you because it means that if you are charged with a crime in Harris County, you will only have to pay 10% of the bail amount to get out of jail. This includes felonies as well as misdemeanors.
In the past, criminal defendants were able to skip bonds altogether by paying cash. This is no longer an option, and any defendant arrested for a misdemeanor crime will have to post bail. For example, if a defendant is arrested for marijuana possession and can only afford $500 bail, that person would have to post $50 to be released from jail.
How the Harris County Bail Bond Process Works
When a person is arrested in Harris County, they are taken to one of the two jails operated by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Depending on the crime’s severity and the inmate’s criminal history, they will either be released on their own recognizance or required to post bail.
If bail is required, the inmate will appear before a judge within 24 hours of their arrest. The judge will consider the facts of the case and set a bail amount.
If the amount is not met, then the inmate will remain in jail until the required amount is paid.
