In light of the tragic elementary school shooting in Uvalde, TX, we find ourselves once again in the never-ending cycle of devastation. There have been 27 school shootings and over 200 shootings across the US in 2022. It is evident that something needs to be done, and should have been done years ago. Many believe that strict gun laws should have been implemented right after the Columbine shooting in 1999, after Sandy Hook in 2012, and after Marjorie Douglass High School in 2018. Instead, nothing was done to prevent the devasting deaths of 19 children and 2 teachers in Uvalde, TX.
However, there is something Texas has done following the continuous shootings in America. They’ve made it easier to purchase guns. Texas is known for being one of the states with the least restrictive gun laws. Despite being home to five of the deadliest shootings in US history, just last year, Governor Gregg Abbott signed into law the ability for Texans to carry guns without a license or proper training.
Many say that politics have no place in an environment full of grieving parents, brothers, sisters, etc. However, the time is now to make a change and enact stricter gun laws. Therefore, we owe it to those who’ve lost loved ones in shootings to make effective gun laws.
A Division In Society
Society has been greatly polarized by the controversy revolving around guns. There are many who go by the belief that “Guns do not kill, people do.” They believe that it is a mental health issue and that, therefore, stricter gun laws are not necessary. However, if one goes by that logic and blames these shootings on mental health issues, shouldn’t more be done to help the mentally ill?
Following the Uvalde, TX school shooting, Governor Gregg Abbott attributed mass shootings to mental health rather than the lack of gun control. However, he cut $211 million from the Health & Human Services Commission in April 2022. The HHSC is the department that oversees mental health services in the state of Texas.
Others believe that these continuous mass shootings are a result of careless politicians who only care about power. They believe that gun control is the only way to prevent further mass shootings and grief. Additionally, many continue to push for harsher gun laws that will make it harder for anyone to buy assault rifles such as an AR-15.
Furthermore, this horrific epidemic has left many with the constant fear of going to the grocery store, gym, restaurant, Cinema, and especially schools. Parents have expressed their tremendous trepidation about sending their kids to school. It is indescribable to express the fear they have of dropping off their children at school and the possibility of it being the last time they’ll see them.
ASAP Bail Bonds
Guns are an excellent method of protection. However, it is always important to use them responsibly. Those in favor of gun control do not want to eradicate guns from the phase of the earth. They simply seek a way to end this ongoing epidemic.
